Muchlis is part of CPM’s rich and colourful history as well as its integral character that personifies the values of CPM.
Founded in 1988, CPM has become synonymous with state-of-the-art, top-of-the-class pipeline constructions and has become a benchmark within the Indonesian Oil and Gas industry. There is a reason why CPM have managed to lay more than 3000 Km of pipes across Indonesia and beyond. It’s not just about excellence in execution; more than that, it’s about doing it again and again, in the fell clutch of circumstance.
The men of CPM could boast extensive experiences in pipeline constructions and facilities, battle-hardened by the challenges on the field and exposures to the elements. They have worked knee-deep in swamps, braved the waves on offshore assignments. You name a hell; they’ve been there and back, and they’ll tell you their tale with a smile. They have even sacrificed their skin to the sun.
But then again, these aren’t just any men. These are the men of CPM.
TAMBAK LOROK Proyek Tambak Lorok 130km
Upon arriving in Semarang’s Achmad Yani International Airport, you are automatically within half an hour from reaching the centre of Semarang. On your way there, on the left side of the road, you will be able to see two of Citra Panji Manunggal’s finest works. Well, technically you could only see one and very little of the other one.
Not far from the airport is the LPG terminal. Tucked in within the harbour, you could recognise the facility from its four spherical tanks, one of which is painted green. Each sphere has a capacity of 2.500 Ton and it is from here that the whole of Central Java receives its supply of LPG.
The other work is a little trickier appreciate. Drive a little further towards the city and you’ll see the Tambak Lorok Power Plant. The supply of gas to run the plant is provided from Gundih, some 140km away, through 20-inch diameter pipes. The fruit from the hard labour that goes into the construction of the pipes though are x metres deep underground. The only thing visible is the receiving unit right next to the plant.
“SEMARANG HAS A SPECIAL PLACE IN THE HEART AND HISTORY OF CPM”
The construction of the LPG terminal was the first of its kind for the Company while the Tambak Lorok project engraved a deep impression amongst the men. Along the years, the city had fed and entertained the men well. Going on a culinary tour in Semarang is like going to an Aerosmith concert; you’ll never get tired of it and it never disappoints.
“ONE OF THE FAVORITES HAS TO BE THE LUMPIA IN THE LOMBOK ALLEY”
One of the favorites has to be the Lumpia in the Lombok alley. Wrapped in the most delicate of pancakes is a melange of pan-fried eggs, vegetables and the signature ingredient that makes Lumpia Semarang the delight that it is: bamboo shoot. It gives the dish a distinctly tangy aroma that becomes its calling card. At Rp. 10,000,- each most people grab a sack and by a few batches. If they don’t finish it themselves there will always be someone nearby to offer a helping stomach. In fact this is one of the must-have things when the men come back to Jakarta. They are akin to a proof of visit.
The Lumpia joint in Lombok alley happens to be right next to one of the tourist attractions in the city. First built in 1746 the Tay Kak Sie temple serves the predominantly Hokien Chinese community in the city. Its red columns and facade hits at you and the unmistakenly oriental design takes you somewhere far away from Semarang until the scent of lumpia reminds you where you are.
If the men of CPM sounds a little too spoilt, eating tasty lumpias instead of the de rigeur nasi bungkus, then they have deserved it. The Tambak Lorok project is by no means an easy feat. The pipes are laid in places other contractors would have had nightmares about. A great portion of it is next to a live and busy railway where even
the slightest shift in the soil could cause the railings to be displaced. And if that is not hard enough, the pipes would have to cross busy roads without causing too much traffic.
But challenges like those are where CPM thrive. What you don’t get from seeing a finished product is the sight of hundreds of tons hard steel-pipes crossing through a backdrop of the locals casava fields, where inevitably compensations have to be paid. In an environment where chaos could easily prevail, the men of CPM are able to keep harmony.
