In cycling, 90 rpm is a good cadence for me. At that rate I deliver the optimum level of torque to the cranks from my pumping glutes. My polar says I’m beating at 140 bpm and my thighs and hamstrings are beginning to feel the burn. But that’s all good. That’s home for me. I can do that all day.

I’ll get ready for it the night before. I carbo-load. Maybe I’ll cheat a bit, although not the healthiest of food. Super-mie. Throw in an egg, and that will be my protein input. Make sure I’m adequately fueled to carry me through the distance. Not too much though. Don’t want to encourage that potbelly. At my age, it’s easy come, tough to go.

Groupset checked, rotated and lightly lubricated… tyres at 100 psi judging from the road surface. I know my bike and I’m familiar with the route. A few ups and downs with a strong punchy climb to finish with.

So too in pipeline construction. Put the proper Men, Machines, Management (and Money) in the right mix, then plod on. I’m familiar with the route of my next pipeline project, and I’m confident. I actually believe that we, myself included, are “the pipeline people”. “We lay ‘em, we leave ‘em satisfied”, we proudly say. I’ve walked the distance. Now I have to walk the talk.

In my mind pipe-laying is all about good reconnaissance, anticipation and planning. Before the first joint is welded up together, the whole project is done in my head. Then all you have to do is put in place good skilled personnel, hand them the correct equipments and just like cycling you get to your natural cadence. One of the keys to achieving great progress on a pipeline job is to get everybody in tune with all its components and quickly reach optimum cadence or rhythm…

… from then on, it’s just plain sailing …

A Home away from Home

The task of installing 330Km of pipeline in a less-than-friendly territory might seem a daunting one to most people. For the people of Citra Panji Manunggal, however, it presents another welcome challenge. In a new and somewhat unchartered territory, they had the chance go beyond their own expectations.

The Arun-Belawan project is more than just another milestone; it also represents the tough-as-nail character of the Company. The pipes they installed runs through 2 provinces and 5 cities, crossing paddy fields, rivers and roads. From Arun, where the gas is sourced, the pipes carry the gas south to fuel a provincial power station. Along the 330Km stretch, the men face many challenges. Some are old and familiar foes. Mostly, though, they are pitted with the ones they have never had to deal with before.

Part of the pipeline goes through the province of Aceh, where political instability still prove to be a fresh scar. Progress is quick for the project but the works on the field were often met with resistance. Sharpened-metals are not uncommon in the area but in the end, it was cool-heads that brought harmony between the workers and the locals. Some of the locals then received the compensations they deserved while some found a livelihood in the project. So common in the history of Citra Panji Manunggal that a situation is resolved through a win-win solution with the local community and here in Aceh again they proved to have done it again.

Despite these challenges, there are the occasional treats for the men. For the caffeine-oriented, Aceh is nothing if not a coffee heaven. In virtually every other corner, a typical Acehnese coffee-shop is open, ubiquitously showing off the skills of their ‘barista’ highly trained in the arts of coffee making… Aceh style. The technique is unique to Aceh: water is passed through a thick layer of finely ground Aceh coffee beans packed in a long bag-like filter several times until the coffee is at just the right viscosity. While the technique is uniquely formulated, it is with their eyes that these coffee makers are able to tell if the coffee is ready to be served. It’s one of those things that comes with years and years of practice; perfection. You sit down and you order a glass of coffee. When the order comes, it comes with plates of snacks to compliment the coffee. At the Acehnese coffee house, they know how to spoil you.

That, though, does not take away from the people of Aceh their religious devotions. Even on divine matters, they put forward beauty as an essential value in their worship. Along the trans-Sumatra road in Aceh, it is easy for anyone to lose count of the numbers of mosques that stand by the road. But that won’t be the most noteworthy thing about them. Instead it is the unique design of the mosque that will most take your breath away. If ever you are in doubt of your whereabouts, one look at the mosques and you will know you are in Aceh.

Also known as side-boom, the pipelayer is the equipment that gives pipeliners their identity. This workhorse could match most terrains thrown at it and could determine the make or brake of a project. It is the icon that defines the work we do.

One of the challenges in pipeline constructions is crossing through an existing infrastructure. Be it roads, rail tracks or even existing pipeline, the auger bore facilitates the crossing by drilling horizontally under and across the obstacle.

While a string of pipes could take on a natural curvature following the contours of the land, certain sections would require the pipe to be specifically bent. Simple and not pretty perhaps, but the bending machine is crucial to every pipeline construction.

How do you ensure milimetre accuracies along hundreds of kilometres of pipeline? Internal clamp is the answer. Aligning two adjoining pipes together before they are welded, the Internal clamp allows for perfection on every joint.

When the works are in full swing, the welding crew needs to move from one joint to the next. Whenever things need to get done fast, the Paywelding machine keeps the crew agile by giving them mobility in challenging terrains.

The project consist of constructing a transmission pipeline to feed gas from offshore Jetty Regasification Unit (JRU) and tie-in to the Peninsular Gas Utilisation (PGU) mainline near Alor Gajah, Melaka, with total length of roughly 26Km.

The Prai II Lateral Gas Pipeline Project is to supply a new 1071 MW CCGT (Combined-Cycle Gas Turbine) Power Plant to be built by Tenaga Nasional Berhard in Prai, Pulau Pinang with natural gas to be tapped from the PGU mainline located in Lunas, Kedah.

The pipeline project is part of the South Sumatra to West Java Gas Transmission Onshore Pipeline Project that aims to supply some of the demand for gas in West Java from sources in South of Sumatra.

Joint Operation Body (JOB) Pertamina and Talisman (Jambi Merang) Ltd From S. Kenawang (SKN) Gas Processing Plant to Grisik, PGN Main Gas Transmission Plant.

The construction of the LPG Plant in Kaji, South Sumatra, aims to optimize associated gas from Kaji-Semoga blok in Rimau by converting them to Liquefied Petroleum Gas.

The construction of the pipeline provides PLTGU Tambak Lorok in Semarang with a supply of gas in the capacity of 200 MMSCFD from Gundih Blok in Cepu, as part of a the Government’s conversion plan from HSD to gas.

The project consist of both onshore and offshore pipeline construction as well as the construction of the onshore ROW. The pipeline is used to supply gas from Bunyu to a power plant in Tarakan.
